Dear Parents and Armbrae Community Members:
The first week of Spring is upon us and the change in the weather is most welcome! The crocuses are coming up, the snow is gone, and the sun is out. Let’s hope the old adage - March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb - holds true!
Before you dig into this edition of the TWA, I wanted to draw your attention to a few items.
Re-enrolment
Re-enrolment “season” takes place between February and March because that is usually the busiest time of year for inquiries from new families. To respond properly to those inquiries, Mrs. Morrison needs to know where we have spaces and which grades will require wait lists.
At the time of writing, 80% of all returning students have re-enroled, so thank you again to the many families that re-enroled early! If you haven’t already taken care of this, you can click here to re-enrol today! Lost your login credentials? Please reach out to Mrs. Morrison for help. Please note that a (digitally) signed contract and your preliminary instalment of $1,500 are required to hold your child's place.
Designer Purse Bingo
Our very first Designer Purse Bingo evening was a huge success! Thank you so much to our organising committee members: Sarah Risley and Sarah Moses (Co-Chairs), Cynthia Allen, Jacqueline Bretzler, Gillian Chapple, Melanie Cleary, Kristina Glover, Meaghan Jackson, Suzanne Morrison, Natalie Owens, Megan Sernyk, Genny Shaw, and Lisa & PeterTaylor!
Thanks also to the over 300 people that attended and made the evening so much fun. Remember our Annual Fund goal this year is to raise $50,000 and this event alone raised over $22,000. Thank you to our massively supportive Armbrae community!
Strategic Plan launch and Family Pizza Party
As you know, we’ve re-scheduled the Strategic Plan launch and family pizza party to (next) Thursday, March 30th at 5:30pm in the AARC. That’s only a week away, so please put it in your family’s calendar and click here to RSVP.
Meantime, please enjoy the rest of this edition.
Cheers,
Steve.
Amazing Osprey Achievements
While we were relaxing during the March break, a number of our Ospreys were out representing Armbrae - the best small school in Canada!
- Amazing Shake Success
- This year, we sent four students to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in an unforgettable weekend at the Global Amazing Shake competition. Competing against 7,400 students from around the world, Elizabeth Olaiya, James Burke, Morgan Clarke and Jack Harrington made the final cut when the participants were narrowed down to 262 students. From there, 3 of our students made Top 24 followed by the Top 10. From there, Morgan and Jack moved on to Top 8, followed by the Top 5! These students demonstrated commitment, respect, hard work and poise for the duration of the weekend.
- Meanwhile, our very own Mrs. Charity Buchanan, was the recipient of the Amazing Shake Advisor of the year. Congratulations, Mrs. B.!
- Spelling Bee
- After holding a Spelling Bee at Armbrae, we sent our top two spellers to Cape Breton University at the beginning of the March Break where they competed in the Provincial Spelling Bee. Both Allie MacSween and Victoria Olaiya (Grade 6) did extremely well in the competition and we are very proud of them for representing Armbrae so well. Congratulations to Allie who tied for third place overall!
- Basketball
- The Senior Girls Basketball team went to Provincials in New Glasgow and placed 4th overall in the Province. They won their first game against North Nova and then played Halifax West. The girls played a great game going into double overtime but ended up short by 3 points. They played in the Bronze medal game against Horton High, being defeated by 1 point. Congratulations on a great season, girls, and on improving their provincial ranking from 5th last season to 4th.
- Canada Games
- Grade 12 student Sophie Pomeroy brought home a silver medal from the Canada Games Women’s Hockey championships in early March. Sophie and her team were bested by British Columbia for the gold medal after defeating Ontario 3-2 in the semifinals. Sophie scored one goal in the tournament, in Nova Scotia’s 3-0 win over Manitoba.
Job Shadow Opportunity! Wednesday, April 19th, 2023
As a part of the Grade 11/12 Career Education class, our students will be completing a job shadow day in an industry they might want to explore once they graduate. If you or a colleague are open to hosting a student as part of their job shadow experience, please fill out this form.
